Food For Thought: Ten ways to share gratitude through food

Food is the essence of life. It nourishes us, delights us, and makes our taste buds swoon. It gives us energy and something to look forward to when our stomachs begin to rumble. There is nothing better than eating a delicious dinner or a carefully prepared dessert at the end of a long day.

Showing appreciation towards others, or returning an act of kindness, are two tasks that can take on many different forms. Bread and Butter Basket Company is all about showing gratitude whenever and wherever we can, and we want to encourage you to do the same - through food. Here are a few ways that you can share gratitude through what we love and savour the most.

Cook together

Get together with a friend you haven’t seen for a while, or with someone you haven’t had time to see as much as you would like. Pick a meal you both enjoy and spend the day cooking together. Gather the ingredients, be mindful of each other’s company, and enjoy the moment - and the delicious meal, of course.

Give a Bread and Butter gift basket

Leave the details to us by ordering an Appreciate gift basket for someone that you want to show gratitude towards. With a variety of delicious cookies and banana chocolate chip bread that will melt in your mouth, this is the perfect use of some delicious treats.

Donate to a food bank

Not everyone has the luxury of having three meals a day. Give back to your local community by donating food to a food bank to share gratitude. The Edmonton Food Bank is only one local charity that you can engage with to make someone else’s life just a little bit better with the gift of food.

Bake for a friend

Take the time to bake a cake or some cookies for a special person that you are thankful to have in your life. Surprising them with a delicious dessert will bring a smile to their face!

Take someone out for dinner

Maybe your parents haven’t had a night out in a while, or maybe your significant other is overwhelmed with work. Offer to take these people in your life, or anyone else for that matter, out for a nice dinner. Indulge in great food at your favourite restaurant and make the most out of a fun night filled with tasting, chewing, and love.

Volunteer at a soup kitchen

Spend your Saturday or Sunday volunteering your time to create warm bowls of soup that you can the give to those in need. Edmonton Soup Sisters is one local program that you can join to do this. Your carefully prepared soup will go to women, children, and youth in crisis. We can’t think of a better way to share gratitude through food than through this meaningful experience.

Plant a garden

Although this might be a difficult task during the winter, it is something that you can take on during the summer by yourself or with a partner. Growing your own food will really help you appreciate it that much more.

Share a meal with a stranger

The next time you are alone at a coffee shop, or sitting at work in the lunchroom, take notice of who might be sitting alone. Ask if you can share a meal with them and strike up a conversation. They may appreciate it more than you know.

Prepare a family recipe

If there is a special family recipe that has been passed down through generations take the time to prepare it for the next family event where you will all be together.

Eat breakfast in bed

Surprise your significant other with a carefully prepared breakfast in bed on the weekend. We’re positive that they will be absolutely delighted.
